RESOLUTION #2026-1
Approving Appointment to fill vacant At-Large City Council Seat,
vacated by Councilperson Jake Ellwood who was elected as Mayor
WHEREAS, The City of Monticello, Iowa is an incorporated City within Jones County, Iowa; and
WHEREAS, Councilperson Jake Ellwood was elected Mayor of Monticello, taking office on or about January 2, 2026, leaving vacant the at-large City Council seat he held at the time of his election as Mayor, and
WHEREAS, The City Council previously directed staff to publish notice of the Council’s intent to fill the open Council seat by appointment at the Council meeting of January 5, 2026, and
WHEREAS, Notice, pursuant to Iowa Code § 372.13, was published as directed by the City Council with said notice appearing in the December 24, 2025 edition of the Monticello Express, a copy of said notice being appended hereto, and
WHEREAS, The required notice informed the public of their opportunity and right to demand a special election and the steps and timeframes associated therewith and no public election was demanded, and
WHEREAS, The Council received notification from resident Ben Duehr that he was interested, willing and able to serve in the capacity of Council At-large and the Council found him to be qualified for appointment.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this City Council of Monticello, Iowa does hereby appoint Ben Duehr to fill the open at-large Council seat left open by Jake Ellwood’s election as Mayor of Monticello.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto subscribed my name and caused the Great Seal for the City of Monticello, Iowa to be affixed. Done this 5th day of January 2026.
