THE CITY OF MONTICELLO, IOWA

IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF MONTICELLO, IOWA

RESOLUTION #19-145

Resolution authorizing Jones County Economic Development to apply for a Jones County Community Foundation Grant to cover a portion of the costs associated with the pursuit of a Commercial Historic District in downtown Monticello

WHEREAS, One of the tenets of the Main Street Iowa program is historic preservation, and as Monticello learned from their Main Street Iowa application the downtown has some great historic integrity determined to be worthy of saving and preserving, and

WHERAS, A future application for a Main Street designation will be significantly strengthened by historic preservation and the registration of the downtown, or a portion thereof, on the National Register of Historic Places, and 

WHEREAS, Jones County Economic Development Director Derek Lumsden has requested that the City authorize him to submit an Application by JCEDC for funding from the Jones County Community Foundation to help cover a portion of the costs related to the preparation and filing of documents necessary to be considered for a National Register designation, with City investment in the project to not exceed $8,000, and

WHEREAS, The Council finds that in addition to the tourism benefits of being placed on the National Register, that the designation would open up funding opportunities to the downtown building owners in the district, with said owners being eligible for state and federal historic tax credits, which can equal as much as 45% of qualified rehabilitation expenses, in addition to other grant opportunities tied to historic preservation.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Monticello, through its’ City Council, in session this 7th day of October that JCEDC is hereby authorized to submit an Application for funding with the Jones County Community Foundation to cover at least a portion of the costs associated with the preparation of documents necessary to pursue a Commercial Historic District designation for downtown Monticello.
